Working Principle of a Foot Valve

Pump Start-Up

When the pump begins running:

  • Suction pressure builds in the pipeline.
  • The pressure difference lifts the valve disc.
  • Fluid flows upward through the valve and into the pump.

Pump Shutdown

When the pump stops:

  • Flow pressure drops.
  • The valve disc closes by itself because of gravity or spring force.
  • Reverse flow gets blocked.

Because of this, the suction pipe stays full of liquid. The pump remains primed for the next time it starts.
